Sexualized violence advisor

The sexualized violence advisor, Lyndsay Anderson (lyndsay.anderson@dal.ca), is trained to help individuals who have experienced sexualized violence.

The sexualized violence advisor:Ìý

  • Offers confidential support

  • Offers crisis intervention

  • Liaises with medical/legal/police services as needed

  • Coordinates safety plans with Security Services

  • Refers complainants to counselling and ongoing support

  • Advises complainants on possible accommodations and processes outlined in the Sexualized Violence Policy,

  • Consult and liaise with Security Services, Student Health & Wellness, Advising & Access Services, as well as the Vice-Provost Student Affairs, and the Assistant Vice-President Human Resources, as appropriate

  • Provides other consultation and case management services (including incident logging)

HRES is currently operating via a blended service model (email, telephone, Microsoft Teams and in-person meetings); in-person appointments are available. The sexualized violence advisor will be flexible in terms of meeting with complainants, including virtual meetings and meetings at alternate locations on campus at the request of the complainant.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

A SANE is a registered nurse who has advanced training and education in forensic examinations of sexual assault victims.

The Ìý provides medical examination and forensic evidence collection in the emergency departments of the IWK Health Centre, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Dartmouth General Hospital, and Cobequid Community Health Centre.

  • SANE is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

  • SANE serves people of all genders (including trans-identified people) and all ages who have experienced a sexual assault in the past seven days (168 hours).

How to Access the SANE Program

  1. Go to the emergency room of one of the participating hospitals or health centres (IWK Health Centre, QEII Health Sciences Centre, Dartmouth General Hospital and Cobequid Community Health Centre). The staff will call a SANE.

  1. Call the Avalon SANE response line (902-425-0122), 24 hours a day, seven days a week

  1. Call the Avalon SANE business line (902-422-6503) during Avalon Centre office hours

Campus supports

  • DalSAFE is a mobile app providing quick and easy access to Security Services including Text to Dispatch, Safe Walk, Mobile BlueLight, campus maps, and many other resources to enhance personal safety.

Off-campus supports

  • (provides up to 12 individual counselling sessions for those impacted by sexual violence; free of charge.)

  • (currently accepting intakes for individual counselling for a range of issues; most services are free)

  • (free counselling for men who experienced sexual assault)
