Darwin Carr (Class of ’09), Jeff Morton (Class of ’79), and Karen Smith – Co-Managers and Environmental Horticulture Technician, Grounds Maintenance
The Friends of the Garden were formed in 1999 to help maintain the specialist plant collections at what is now known at the Faculty of Agriculture including the Herb Garden, the Native Plant Garden and the Rock Garden.
This group of tireless volunteers has provided an incredible gift to 鶹ý – but they maintain that none of it would be possible without the leadership of Darwin Carr, Jeff Morton and Karen Smith.
Every Wednesday morning, Darwin, Jeff and Karen get down and dirty with the Friends to weed, dig, plant and prune. In the off-season they provide nursery and greenhouse space and help with propagating and making plans for the following spring.
Along with hard work, Darwin, Jeff and Karen also provide support, encouragement and direction to the Friends of the Garden. They help to make the efforts of the Friends more focused and efficient. From coordinating weekly plans to introducing new members, their expertise is indispensable. And according to the Friends, they couldn’t ask for better mentors. Darwin, Jeff and Karen are “capable, friendly and tolerant of us old folks!”
