The Faculty of Agriculture partnered with the Maritime Beef Council and Springboard Atlantic to host its first Beef Day @ Dal this past Saturday, November 25th at the MacRae Library.
The event brought together 80 researchers, industry, and government representatives to discuss current research activities within the beef sector and review various industry activities and support services within the beef sector.
鈥淓vents that bring industry and academia together are important,鈥 said Acting Dean Dr. Gefu Wang-Pruski.聽 鈥淭he discussion of industry challenges, the collaboration on research and the many insights that will support the next generation of producers is key to the success of the beef industry.鈥
Beef research updates were held in the morning on various topics including animal welfare, genetics and reproduction, and forage and field practices.聽 Several industry presentations from the Canadian Cattle Association, the Beef Cattle Research Council, the Maritime Beef Council and a visit to the Atlantic Stockyards for a equipment demonstration by the Nova Scotia Cattle Producers rounded out the program.
Lynsay Beavers, Canadian Cattle Association and Jaime White, Beef Cattle Research Council, moderated a screening of the food waste documentary Reduce, Reuse, Ruminate, highlighting how the agriculture sector is beneficial to climate change via the upcycling of food waste.
鈥淢any of our faculty partner with the beef sector on important research from genetics and feed efficiency to climate adaptation and animal welfare,鈥 said Brennan Gillis Office of Commercialization & Industry Engagement.聽 鈥淚t was awesome to host them on campus and to spend the day discussing current industry trends and challenges.鈥
