On January 31, the Faculty of Dentistry will host its 2014 Student Table Clinics and Dental Hygiene Presentations (5-8 pm, Dentistry Building). We sat down with the Chair of the Table Clinics Committee, Prof. Peggy Maillet (DipDH鈥74) to find out more about this annual event.
Question 1:聽How long have you been involved with the Table Clinics night?聽
I have been a Table Clinic Advisor since 1996. In 2007, I became Course Director for the dental hygiene students and Chair of the Table Clinic Committee.
Question 2: Quite a few alumni attend this event each year. What do you think are the main reasons they keep coming back?聽
One of the big reasons is the Continuing Education. Our students are presenting cutting edge knowledge on dental topics so it鈥檚 a great opportunity for attendees to become aware of what鈥檚 new and exciting. It鈥檚 also a social night where alumni enjoy returning to the dental school and catching up with their classmates.
Question 3:聽What kind of prizes or recognition will the top presenters receive?
For dentistry, the top winner will receive an all expenses paid trip to represent 麻豆传媒 at the national CDA/Dentsply student table clinic competition held in March, 2014 in Vancouver, BC. In addition, the first place dentistry prize winner also receive sponsored prizes valuing approximately 聽$1,200.
Question 4:聽The format of the dental hygiene student presentations will be a little different this year. What can you tell us about it?
This year, the second year dental hygiene students will be giving 10-15 minute presentations in groups of 3-4. The research that will be presented will focus on providing optimal health care to people with a variety of conditions.
Question 5: What is your favorite memory of Table Clinics as either a student or as Chair of the committee?
My favorite memory was in 1974 when Pauline Murphy-Sutow and I were the winners for dental hygiene. Our topic was 鈥淩estorative Dentistry for the Dental Hygienist.鈥 At that time, table clinics were on Thursday evenings. At the end of the evening, Dr. A. T. Roger who was the clinic director at the time, announced that we would have no clinic the next morning. That was my favorite part!
