Wellness @ Weldon: Polysubstance Use, Harm Reduction Strategies, and Dal Student Health & Wellness

Wellness @ Weldon's second event invites Schulich Law students to visit information booths from Health Canada and �鶹��ý Student Health & Wellness to learn more about polysubstance use* and harm reduction strategies, as well as about the services available to them through the university's on-campus health centre.

Students can play a digital interactive memory game and take a quiz at the Health Canada booth for the chance to win prizes like tumblers or Uber Eats vouchers.

*Polysubstance use is defined as the use of more than one substance at a time, such as alcohol or cannabis.

Tech Tok: AI and the Practice of Law

The Law & Technology Institute invites lawyers, members of the Schulich Law and �鶹��ý communities, and interested members of the general public to the fourth lecture in its Tech Tok series, a discussion about the potential and pitfalls of legal technology innovations.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to significantly impact both the day-to-day practice of law, as well as the economics and structure of the legal profession as a whole.

Featuring experts across a range of disciplines and professional contexts, these two panels will explore the capabilities and limitations of emerging legal technologies, how they are likely to transform the practice of law, and where the profession is moving as a result of these changes.

A brief networking reception will follow the second panel.

Women Empowerment-Themed Spin Class

The �鶹��ý Feminist Legal Association (DFLA) is partnering with the Schulich Mental Health and Wellness Society to host a women empowerment-themed spin class.

Proceeds will be donated to Wellness Within, a volunteer-based non-profit organization that provides support to clients in pregnancy, for abortion, childbirth, infant feeding, and newborn care. They facilitate workshops and education sessions for the public, students, health care professionals, and women, trans, and nonbinary people who have experienced criminalization.

Schulich Law Professor Rob Currie, KC, Viscount Bennett Professor of Law, invites you to a panel discussion on global and Canadian anti-corruption efforts featuring a proposal for an international anti-corruption court, as well as how shadowy Catholic organization Opus Dei has avoided accountability for corruption.

Chaired by Currie, the Colloquium will feature Gareth Gore, financial journalist and author of OPUS: The Cult of Dark Money, Human Trafficking and Right-Wing Conspiracy Inside the Catholic Church, and Allan Rock, former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations and President Emeritus of the University of Ottawa.

The Schulich School of Law cordially invites you to attend the Innis Christie Lecture in Labour and Employment Law: A Most Misunderstood Freedom – The Supreme Court of Canada, Freedom of Association and Labour Rights.

This lecture will be led by Professor Emeritus Michael Lynk, Western University.

�鶹��ý the Lecture: This annual public lecture and intensive short course in labour and employment law was established to honour the memory of former Professor and Dean Innis Christie, Q.C., and his accomplishments in the field of labour and employment law.

�鶹��ý the Topic: Freedom of association has proven to be the most difficult section of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the Supreme Court of Canada to provide a coherent and meaningful guarantee.

In contrast to the other core constitutional rights and freedoms – including expression, religion, equality and life, liberty and security – the dozen rulings by the Court since 1987 on the associational freedom have been marked by widely fluctuating interpretations, hesitancies, advances and retreats, as well as the application of more onerous constitutional tests.

In Canada, freedom of association has been largely understood as a labour right. Does this help to explain why the Court has been so challenged in offering a lucid, liberal and dependable approach to one of our most fundamental rights?
