The Morphology of Two Transverse Channels on the Northeast Newfoundland Shelf

Recent bathometry, and seismic reflection profiles on the continental shelf off northeast Newfoundland have revealed a complex relief on the outer shelf. This area is anomalously deep compared to shelves elsewhere off Canada's east coast. The data suggest subaerial erosion followed by glaciation were the major processes of landscaping. Gradual invasion of the outer shelf by the Pleistocene ice sheets resulted in a thicker accumulation of ice in the depression areas. When the ice retreated, stagnant blocks may have remained grounded in the depression areas. Sea level rise as a result of the retreat of the main ice sheet, may have resulted in the grounded blocks floating away before deposition of glacial debris could occur in the depressions.
