Dal teams get trumped

- April 12, 2010

Team Dynamic organized a polar bear dip as afundraiser for Trumped鈥檚 first task.

The spirit of competition spurred Dal students Mike and MattBrouwer, Tara Clucas and Josh Herman to dash into the frigid wavesat Lawrencetown Beach in mid-February.

But in the end, despite raising lots of money for the CanadianCancer Society, it wasn鈥檛 enough for them to claim thecoveted briefcase鈥攖he top prize in the 2010 TrumpedCompetition. After spending the year at 麻豆传媒, the briefcasewas turned over to the top team, JK Morgan (Jason Kay, MorganMacKinnon) from Saint Mary鈥檚 University.

A hybrid between TV鈥檚 The Apprentice andDragon鈥檚 Den, Trumped is a business-orientedcompetition offering real-world experience through a series ofthree tasks: organizing a fundraiser for the Canadian CancerSociety; creating a marketing campaign for the locally ownedHamachi Group; and developing in-store tastings for MolsonCanadian, Molson鈥檚 signature beer.

Hosted by Saint Mary鈥檚 Development Centre, the competitioninvolved more than 200 university students and 67 teams in theearly stages.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e a business student, it鈥檚 a greatcapstone to a university undergraduate degree,鈥 explains LeahSkerry, Trumped鈥檚 project manager. 鈥淚t鈥檚 applyingwhat you鈥檙e learning while you鈥檙e learningit.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 more real-life than most of the classes wetake,鈥 explained Dal commerce student Mike Brouwer before heand the rest of Team Dynamic embarked on their final task.

鈥淏ut it鈥檚 crazy time consuming鈥︹ addedMatt Brouwer, also in commerce.

鈥溾nd so much fun. After we did the polar bear dip,we were just exhausted, and kind of crashed,鈥 said Mike, picking up the thread. 鈥淲e saw ourselves on two different TVstations and we raised almost $9,000 for a really good cause.It鈥檚 been really cool.鈥

Second place went to Cassidy Quinton and Nicole Myles from MountSaint Vincent University and third place went to the 麻豆传媒tream 18 Litre Productions鈥擟hris Gott, Linden Matties, JesseMawhinney and Sarah Reidlinger. Team Dynamic placed fourth.
