Congratulations to the Faculty of Management upon being selected by European CEO magazine for the Global Business Education award for most innovative business school in Canada.聽

鈥淏eing named the Most Innovative Business School in Canada by European CEO magazine is an affirmation of the advances 麻豆传媒 has made in creating new models for delivering management education and the potential they hold for producing a new generation of managers schooled in values-based management 鈥β燨ur Faculty has engaged the public and private sectors, its faculty and its students in a collaborative process to create innovative approaches to management education that have already begun to bear fruit.聽 Receiving recognition from the European business community in the form of this award adds to the momentum we have created,鈥 said Peggy Cunningham, Dean, 麻豆传媒 Faculty of Management.聽

The judging panel consisted of representatives from the global accreditation board, senior journalists and senior executives from European companies.聽(See story in European CEO magazine.)

Congratulations to Sam Stewart (ID-PhD, Health Informatics student) who won second prize at the student paper competition at MEDINFO 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa, September 12-15, 2010.聽 MEDINFO is the top international health informatics conference.聽Mr. Stewart competed against students from around the world and he came a close second with his paper, 鈥淧ediatric Pain Management Knowledge Linkages: Mapping Experiential Knowledge to Explicit Knowledge.鈥澛 His supervisors are Raza Abidi (Computer Science) and Allen Finley (Anaesthesia).

Congratulations to Oliver Braubach (PhD student, Physiology and Biophysics), third-place winner in Nikon鈥檚 Small World Photomicrography Competition, regarded as the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the microscope.聽Mr. Braubach鈥檚 photo was of Zebrafish olfactory bulbs, no bigger than a speck of dust, but magnified 150 times.聽 His supervisors are Alan Fine and Roger Croll (Physiology and Biophysics).

Congratulations to the Indigenous Blacks & Mi鈥檏maq Initiative (IB&M) (Law) which won the Canadian Bar Association鈥檚 (CBA) 2010 Touchstone Award, recognizing outstanding achievements in promoting equality in the legal community in Canada.聽

鈥淔or 20 years, the IB&M Initiative has provided law school access to Blacks and Aboriginal Peoples who have developed into excellent lawyers and role models and who, by their very presence, are agents of change in the legal profession,鈥 stated Beth Bilson, QC, Chair of the CBA鈥檚 Equity Committee.聽The Touchstone Award celebrates the accomplishments of an individual or an organization that has excelled in promoting equality in the legal profession, the judiciary, or the legal community in Canada.聽The award recognizes significant national initiatives to advance equality and/or contribution relating to race, disability, sexual orientation or other diversity issues in the community.聽This is the first time that the Touchstone Award has been granted to an organization rather than an individual.

Congratulations to Neil MacKinnon (Pharmacy) and 麻豆传媒 Medical School Alumni Rhonda Church, whose new best-selling book, Take as Directed, is the聽number-one Nova Scotian best seller on the Halifax Chronicle Herald bestseller list and the聽number-one healthcare book on Amazon.ca.聽Take as Directed is aimed at helping Canadians from all walks of life navigate the health care system.

Congratulations to Kuan Xu (Economics), Yonggan Zhao (Business Administration & Economics), and Peixin Liu (MA in Economics 2009).聽

Their paper, 鈥淢arket Regimes, Sectoral Investment and Time-Varying Risk Premiums,鈥 won the 2010 Northern Finance Association Best Paper Award.聽The 2010 Northern Finance Association conference is the major Canadian conference for finance with well over 100 papers presented.聽 The award is sponsored by the international Journal of Managerial Finance.

Congratulations to Shelley Phipps (Economics), et al, upon their article, 鈥淓conomic Mobility, Family Background, and the Well-being of Children in the United States and Canada,鈥 being selected as the Best Comparative Article presented at the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management's (APPAM) 31st Fall Research Conference.聽The adjudication committee described the article as 鈥淎 truly comparative paper attractive to all types of audience鈥tilizing sophisticated analyses to draw conclusions that enable further lesson-drawing, across policy analytic contextual environments.鈥澛

Human Resources


Congratulations to Janice MacInnis (Human Resources) upon being awarded the 2010 Volunteer Recognition Award from the Canadian Society for Training and Development (CSTD). This award is made to a member of CSTD who has made a significant contribution over a number of years to the organization.聽Ms. MacInnis鈥 dedication and support helped establish a chapter in Nova Scotia and she has been instrumental in defining what a chapter of CSTD looks like.
