Anna von Maltzahn was instrumental in the Tigers strong performance this past weekend. Although Saturday's game ended in a 77-66 loss to Cape Breton University, she contributed 14 points, two blocks, three steals and no turnovers to keep Dal close behind the Capers. On Sunday, she led her team to defeat CBU 71-67 in overtime with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block and four steals. A second-year science student, Ms. von Maltzahn is from Halifax, N.S.

Joe Schow, basketball

Men’s basketball forward Joe Schow led the Tigers to victory on Saturday versus CBU. In the battle against the Capers, Schow tallied 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists to earn Subway player of the game honors. A fifth-year Russian student, Mr. Schow is from Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Weekend recap:


At home this past weekend, the Tigers basketball teams and women’s hockey team faced tough competition.

On Friday night, the women’s hockey team defeated Mount Allison 2-1 in overtime. Although Mt. A got an early lead, Tigers Captain Laura Shearer scored in the second period to tie up the game. After a few minutes of close overtime play, Robyn Nicholson secured the win for Dal. On Saturday the women’s team earned a second overtime win over UPEI. Jocelyn Leblanc scored the final point in overtime to give Dal a 2-1 win and earn Subway Player of the Game honours.

Women’s hockey has a break next weekend, but will be on the road on January 22 to take on St. FX.

Tigers basketball took on Cape Breton University at Dalplex in doubleheader games Saturday and Sunday.

Dal men’s basketball defeated Cape Breton 93-79 Saturday night. Joseph Schow led the team scoring 26 points and Simon Farine scored 19. For his leadership on the court Mr. Schow received Subway Player of the Game honours. On Sunday, the black and gold could not get ahead of the Capers and were defeated 64-57. Currently CBU is first in the AUS with 22 points and the Tigers are second with 16 points.

Unable to crack through CBU’s defence Saturday night, the Dal women’s basketball team lost 77-66. The top scorer for the Tigers was Patricia McNeil with 24 points, which earned her player of the game honours. On Sunday the women enjoyed a 71-67 victory over CBU. Anna von Maltzahn tallied 18 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block and 4 steals.

The basketball teams travel to UPEI on Friday for double header action against the Panthers.

At home this weekend, the Tigers men’s hockey team will face Saint Mary’s Huskies on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and then St. Francis Xavier on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s event will feature a special pre-game presentation to Chuck Wheeler, a long time volunteer in the men’s hockey program. Following the game the Â鶹´«Ã½ community is invited to a reception in Mr. Wheeler’s honour at the University Club.
