On June 3, former 麻豆传媒 Tigers women鈥檚 basketball coach and Health and Human Performance professor, Carolyn Savoy will be the target of comedic insults, praise, outlandish stories and heartwarming tributes.

That鈥檚 right, you guessed it 鈥 she鈥檚 going to be roasted!

Roastmaster Joel Jacobson, a former columnist for the Chronicle Herald and graduate of 麻豆传媒鈥檚 commerce program, will lead a panel of guests from Dr. Savoy鈥檚 storied past surrounded by family, friends, fans, colleagues and well-wishers.

Scholarship

鈥淐arolyn is the perfect person to be roasted and toasted. Her accomplishments as a coach at Dal have been remarkable through her long career, consistently leading her teams to the top of the heap of the AUS," commented Mr. Jacobson. 鈥淚鈥檓 sure those roasting her, players whom she鈥檚 coached and others with whom she鈥檚 worked, will have wonderful things to say, but also will dig deeper into the person Carolyn is (and was as a coach) and will let the audience know more of the intimate details that have never before been revealed. The cause, a scholarship in Carolyn鈥檚 name for a female basketball player, is a worthwhile one and should attract the interest of Dalhousians and basketball fans throughout the region.鈥

The event will raise funds for a new endowment fund for a women鈥檚 basketball athlete named the Dr. Carolyn Savoy Award of Excellence.

Not one to shy away from the spotlight, Dr. Savoy will certainly be feeling the heat at this event and is eager to support the program she led for so many years.

鈥淚 am honored that 麻豆传媒 has named a scholarship for the women's basketball team in my name,鈥 said Dr. Savoy.聽鈥淚 am looking forward to reconnecting with former players and alumni as well as seeing sponsors, colleagues and friends聽of the women's basketball program over the 32 years that I had the honour to be the 麻豆传媒 Tigers women's basketball coach.

"I always loved being called 'coach,'" continues Dr. Savoy. "I actually prefer it to any other name I have!聽I am anxious to hear some of the roasts that I will receive. I know there are many funny stories about my career that will be told, so it should entertain all of the guests. I will take all of the ribbing in stride as the fundraiser is for a very good cause.鈥

The event is being organized by committee members including current women鈥檚 basketball head coach Anna Stammberger, who played for the Tigers early in Dr. Savoy鈥檚 coaching career.

Return investment

鈥淐arolyn invested so much in the women鈥檚 basketball program here for over 30 years,鈥 notes Ms. Stammberger. 鈥淗er legacy will live on through this endowment, enhancing what we have to offer potential student-athletes who are considering coming to 麻豆传媒 and the women鈥檚 basketball program.鈥

Guest speakers are being tightly guarded to keep Dr. Savoy guessing, but it has been confirmed that Ren茅e Lyons, professor with Faculty of Health Professions and Carol Rosenthal,聽former Tiger stand-out from the 1980s, will be two of the roasters.

The event will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at 麻豆传媒鈥檚 University Club. Tickets are $100 ($66 tax receipt) each and include a three-course dinner. There is limited seating, so don鈥檛 delay! Call 494-3372 to get your ticket today!
