Women’s Hockey
The Tigers ended the first half of their season on a winning note as they defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 3-2 in a shootout. Elizabeth MacArthur buried her team-high eighth goal of the season when she snuck one past the Tommies goalie after a mad scramble in front of the net in the first period to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tommies fired back with two goals in a 1:23 minute stretch later in the first to make it a 2-1 game after 20 minutes of play. Maggie Beaton knotted the game up at two after she notched her sixth of the year midway through the second period, and neither team could find the back of the net in the third and they headed to overtime.
After ten scoreless minutes of overtime, the teams headed to a shootout. Lisa MacLean couldn’t convert on her first chance for the Tigers, and the Tommies snuck one past Jeanne Morin in the first round to go up 1-0 in the shootout. Morin stepped up and turned away the next four shooters, and Jesse Rietveld and Jennifer Thompson scored in the third and fifth rounds to seal the deal for the Tigers.
They now sit fifth in the AUS with a 5-8 record as they head into the holiday break. The Tigers will be back on the ice January 9 as they head to Antigonish to take on the StFX X-Women.
Men’s Hockey
The men’s hockey team could not scrape out a win in their final two games of the calendar year losing to Acadia and StFX.
The Tigers were in Wolfville on Wednesday night playing the CIS #5 ranked Acadia Axemen. Brett Thompson scored a natural hat-trick propelling the Axemen to a 5-1 victory over the Tigers.
After conceding a goal just a minute after the opening faceoff, Alex Cote responded for the Tigers scoring two minutes and 38 seconds later on a nifty deke. The Axemen went on to score three more goals in the period and added their fifth in the third period. Â Â
The Tigers squandered a 2-0 lead against the StFX X-Men on Saturday as they fell 4-2 to push their losing streak to four games.
JP Harvey got the Tigers on the board with an early first period goal and Fabian Walsh added another eight minutes later when he scored on a two-on-one to make it a 2-0 game for the Tigers after the first period. The X-Men fired back, however, tying the game midway through the second period, and they added two more in the third to defeat the Tigers 4-2. Corbin Boes made 21 saves for the Tigers, whose power play woes continued as they went 0-6 on the night.
The Tigers are seventh in the AUS with a 4-11-1 record as they head into the holiday break. They’ll open up the second half of the season with a five-game home stand as they look to get back in the win column against the Acadia Axemen on January 3rd.
