October marks the month when everyone across the nation proudly wears pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
The Tigers have taken an annual stance in contributing to such a wonderful cause by raising money each year and participating in events that directly support breast cancer research.
This year, there are three varsity teams on campus who have made it their goals to contribute as much as they can to support the cause.
The women鈥檚 volleyball team, led by veteran setter Abby Czenze, competed in the CIBC Run for the Cure in Halifax on October 2, 2016. The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation backs this annual run each year which consists of a 1 km route as well as a 5 km route in several locations across Canada. The team had a goal of raising $150 for the cause but surpassed that number, raising just under $200.
This year marks the 10th straight year that U Sports (former CIS) women鈥檚 basketball teams across the country contribute their efforts through the program 鈥淪hoot for the Cure鈥�. This program allows university women鈥檚 basketball teams to designate one game a year to support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. 鈥淭he U Sports Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven to be an overwhelming success, raising over $1 million in donations in past years. This will be the sixth year in a row that all 47 U Sports women鈥檚 basketball schools are participating in the program.鈥�
The 麻豆传媒 women鈥檚 basketball team is one of those 47 teams participating as their Shoot for the Cure game is set to play out on January 10, 2017 against the Acadia Axewomen at 6 pm. Last year, the women raised over $3,500 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation - they are hoping to top that number this season.聽 聽
The final team who plans to support October鈥檚 Breast Cancer Awareness month is the women鈥檚 hockey team. Led by veteran goaltender Mati Barrett, the women鈥檚 hockey team have several events planned this month to contribute as much as possible to the cause.
The team will hold a Pink the Rink game on Saturday October 29th at the Forum against the STU Tommies. Puck drop is at 7 pm and the women encourage everyone who plans to attend to wear something pink since they will be playing in their pink jerseys.
鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to participate in the first Pink the Rink game in several years. We are also thrilled to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer research鈥� says Barrett. 鈥淲e have surpassed our fundraising goal of $1,500 which we are very happy about.聽Breast cancer touches the lives of聽many people so we are pleased to do our part to promote awareness and raise funds.鈥�
In advance of the Pink the Rink game, the squad will host a bake sale on Monday October 24 and Tuesday October 25 in the LSC building on campus from 10:30 am 鈥� 2:30 pm. There will also be another bake sale at the game 鈥� all proceeds from these three sales will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
