Â鶹´«Ã½â€™s Department of Athletics recognized inspirational athletes, committed coaches and incredible volunteers at the 66th Annual Black and Gold Athletic Awards Banquet last night.Â
This season, Â鶹´«Ã½ celebrated nine AUS championship titles, four U SPORTS All-Canadian awards, 22 major AUS and U SPORTS awards, 50 AUS all-stars, and two U SPORTS medals. Alex Carson, of the men’s basketball team earned his first Climo Award (male athlete of the year), while swimmer Reagan Crowell and track and field athlete Lorena Heubach were named the Class of ’55 co-winners (female athlete of the year).
A fifth-year guard, Alex Carson had a great year on the court. He averaged 18.5 points per game during the regular season to lead the Tigers to their third-consecutive AUS championship title. An AUS first team all-star this year, he was named a U SPORTS second team All-Canadian. He ends his career with the Tigers with 196 3-point field goals made, the most of any career Â鶹´«Ã½ player and seventh overall in the AUS.
Third-year swimmer Reagan Crowell had an outstanding season in the pool winning six gold and one silver at the AUS championships. The AUS MVP and championship swimmer of the meet, she went on to set a new Â鶹´«Ã½ record in the 800m freestyle event to win a silver medal and earn U SPORTS second team All-Canadian honours at the U SPORTS championships. She also had four other top 10 performances at the event.
Despite her struggles with injuries this season, fourth-year track and field athlete Lorena Heubach was named the AUS track and field championships MVP for the second straight-season after winning the pentathlon and long jump events. She went on to earn a bronze medal in the pentathlon, along with a sixth-place finish in the long jump and helped the 4x200m relay team to a seventh-place finish at the national championships.
