PART-TIME ACADEMIC POSTING DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY

POSITION:Â Part-time Academic
DEPARTMENT/LOCATION:Â Biology / Life Sciences Centre / Faculty of Science
PAY RATE:Â In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement for three half-credit classes for the period September 1, 2014 through April 30, 2015.
WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for (1) teaching the Biology laboratory component of, (2) co-teaching the Biology lecture component of, and (3) working as an effective member of the teaching team of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science (disp.science.dal.ca). (1) Responsible for laboratories, on most Friday afternoons, 14:35-17:25, including preparation in advance of each lab exercise. Responsibilities include revising the lab manual, as needed, and posting it online; supervising the DISP Biology TAs/ Markers/ Demonstrators; overseeing their marking (providing marking keys and reviewing marked papers); preparing TAs for laboratory exercises; providing an in-lab introduction to each lab section; posting marks on OWL; and directing the lab technician to collect and organize materials and supplies. (2) Responsible for delivering first-year, introductory-level lectures in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Animal Biology; on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 13:05-14:25; approximate dates are Oct 14-Nov 27, 2014, and Jan 6-Feb 12, 2015. Also responsible for setting and marking test (quiz and exam) questions based on the lecture material. Note that tests are held outside of the regular lecture time. (3) Attend weekly faculty meetings at a mutually agreeable time to facilitate the integration of teaching in the program.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or a related field, with research expertise in Cell Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and/or Animal Biology. Evidence of teaching effectiveness. Excitement about teaching Biology within the context of interdisciplinary science. Up-to-date First Aid and CPR. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., and previous experience teaching Biology to undergraduate students.

PAY RATE:Â In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement for two consecutive half-credit classes for the period September 1, 2014, through April 30, 2015.
WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the Statistics component of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science (see disp.science.dal.ca). In the fall term, responsibilities include developing and delivering the first-year, introductory-level Statistics lectures, usually 10:35-11:25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays; overseeing the laboratory (tutorial) component, on Tuesdays 9:05-10:25; incorporating data collected by students in classes and on field trips into lectures, lab exercises, and/or weekly assignments; hiring and supervising the TA; setting weekly assignments for the fall term; directing the TA to mark the assignments; posting lecture, lab and assignment material on OWL; and setting, marking, and invigilating tests. In winter term, responsibilities include teaching occasional modules in research methods in support of the Research Project and Writing in Science component; teaching one or more additional statistical techniques to support the other subjects or the research projects; and evaluating student learning through a few questions on the final exam. Throughout the year, responsibilities include meeting weekly with the other Integrated Science faculty members at a mutually-agreeable time; and facilitating the integration of Statistics with other science subjects.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Statistics or considerable experience teaching Statistics to undergraduate students. Strong interest in teaching Statistics within the context of interdisciplinary science and scientific research. Evidence of teaching effectiveness. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., previous experience supervising undergraduate research (including experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation of scientific results), and/or previous experience teaching undergraduates within an integrated science context. Furthermore, an academic and/or research background in more than one scientific field will be considered an asset.
