EHS Assistant for Principal Investigators

Posted by Environmental Health & Safety Office on February 24, 2016 in General Announcements

To Principal Investigators,

The Environmental Health and Safety Office is pleased to announce that the Â鶹´«Ã½ initiative, EHS Assistant, a web-based system, is being implemented. The EHS Assistant is a user-friendly tool that allows the Environmental Health & Safety Office and researchers, quicker access to permits, inventory records, and tracking tools.

As part of the first phase of implementation, researchers working with Radioisotopes and Biohazardous materials will be contacted starting this month.

What are the benefits of the EHS Assistant?

• Online Permit Registration, Amendments and Renewals
• Design your own Lab Placards
• Real-time updates of radioisotope usage
• Real-time check-in of received radioisotope orders
• Worker training tracking
• Data Conversion tool (radioisotope users only)
• Waste Disposal tracking (radioisotope users only)
• Access from anywhere with internet connection
• Lab administration tools and records all in one place, for easy retrieval

When can I start using the EHS Assistant?

Principal investigators will be contacted to arrange a time for training for themselves and their lab managers and any workers (if applicable). A training session of one to two hours, at a convenient location, will show you how to use the software and ensure all your inventory is included within the EHS Assistant. System trainers and a safety officer will attend the sessions to demonstrate how the EHS Assistant works and to answer questions.

Please note: Labs affected by the retro-fit will be scheduled for training at a more convenient time.

Additional walk-in training sessions will be made available starting in April, for workers who would like to become familiar with the new system or for anyone who would like to learn more.

A small pilot group of lab representatives from the Halifax and Truro campus communities had the opportunity to test the system in November. Their valuable insight helped shape the EHS Assistant development.

Access to the EHS Assistant is through the dal.ca/safety under Quick Links, where we’ll also be directing you to EHS Assistant Updates!
