TEACHING ASSISTANT: ENVS2100 Environmental Informatics

JOB DESCRIPTION: ENVS2100 broadly covers topics of science communication, introductory GIS and remote sensing (using ArcGIS), database management (Excel) and basic statistics (Excel/R). The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for assisting the primary instructor, supporting and occasionally leading the computer lab sessions, marking student assignments, tests, and quizzes, and responding to student queries. The position requires availability during lab sessions which run every Thursday 8:30am-10:00am during the fall 2018 term. The candidate will report directly to the instructor.
REQUIREMENTS: The Teaching Assistant must be a senior undergraduate or graduate student at Â鶹´«Ã½, preferably with some GIS experience. The ability to communicate effectively, lead tutorials, mark assignments in a timely manner, and provide constructive feedback to students are key assets for this position.

TEACHING ASSISTANT: ENVS2500 Field Methods in Environmental Science

JOB DESCRIPTION: ENVS2500 is a fall term field course scheduled as 1 x 3h lab sessions per week. The course is a combination of field and wet lab instruction with students visiting a variety of nearby field sites which may include Point Pleasant Park, Sir Sandford Fleming Park, the Williams Lake / Colpitt Lake Backlands area and various locations on campus and downtown Halifax. The course focuses on three modules: (1) biological diversity / sampling with an focus on visual and auditory identification of Atlantic avian and amphibian species, (2) soil composition analysis, and (3) air quality and/or noise level sampling. The course seeks three teaching assistants with prior experience in one or more of the above modules, though all TAs will need to be present for off-campus field excursions. Responsibilities include managing student groups while in the field and providing on site instruction and guidance, marking lab assignments, tests, and quizzes, and responding to student queries. TAs will also meet with the course instructor and other community collaborators (e.g., NCC, NS Bird Society) outside of class time as needed to prepare for course activities. The position requires availability during lab sessions which run every Friday 9:35am-12:25pm during the fall 2018 term and may include before hours set-up and after hours clean-up.
 REQUIREMENTS: The Teaching Assistant must be a senior undergraduate or graduate student at Â鶹´«Ã½, preferably with some experience in one or more of the above three course modules. The ability to communicate effectively, to lead and engage students, provide constructive feedback, and demonstrate competency and adherence to safety in the field are important assets for this position.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Teaching Assistant (also termed Teaching Mentor in the context of this course) will be responsible for assisting the Primary Instructor with ENVS-SUST 3502 Environmental Problem Solving II, Campus as a Living Laboratory. In this course, students form groups and identify sustainability-related research topics to complete during the term, culminating in a final research report and Pecha Kucha presentation. Primary duties of the Teaching Mentor include attending weekly tutorials, meeting with assigned student groups to support research project development and completion, marking student assessments, and meeting regularly with the Instructor and the rest of the teaching team to align grading and discuss student progress. Teaching Mentors report directly to the instructor and work in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability.
REQUIREMENTS: The Teaching Mentor must be a graduate student at Â鶹´«Ã½, and possess a background in environmental science or studies or sustainability. They must be reliable, energetic, and committed to supporting student research projects centered around campus sustainability. A scholarly background in quantitative and/or qualitative and/or mixed methods and independent experience in conducting research is necessary. Attendance at tutorials on Thursdays between 10:05 – 11:25am during the Winter 2019 term (Jan-April) is required as well as availability for meetings with the teaching team and Sustainability Office to be scheduled at the start of the term.
