The Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a 12-month, limited term appointment (100%Â FTE) at the rank of instructor commencing July 1, 2021.
The Instructor hired for this position will be jointly responsible for the laboratory component of the first year courses Principles of Biology I (BIOLÂ 1010) & II (BIOLÂ 1011) offered during the Fall and Winter terms, the Laboratory Study of Fishes (BIOL/MARIÂ 4080) in the 2022 Winter term and a Spring 2022Â SEASIDEÂ course on marine life and/or intertidal ecology.
For BIOL 1010 and 1011, the position involves coordination of the weekly laboratory activities; teaching in the laboratories; preparation of laboratory manuals; hiring and supervising teaching assistants; managing delivery of tests, exams, and online quizzes; managing course grades and the class website; communication with students and with other teaching faculty and technical staff; and other course-related duties as required. This position will also be solely responsible for the delivery and administration of BIOL/MARI 4080, including the hiring and supervision of teaching assistants, and ensuring course materials and supplies are on hand.
SEASIDE classes are intensive 3.0 credit hour courses that can have durations of 2 to 3 weeks offering students the opportunity to learn in the field. This can include overnight stays tenting in the field. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, labs, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The successful applicant will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. In addition, the successful applicant may be responsible for driving students on field trips in a 7-passenger van rented by the university, so having a valid driver’s license is preferred.
Candidates should have an advanced degree in Biology or a related field and previous laboratory and lecture teaching experience; in particular, previous work with first-year university students will be an asset. Broad knowledge of biology across the range of introductory topics, as well as engagement with the science education literature, will be beneficial in this position, as will previous experience with the Brightspace learning management system. Candidates must have demonstrated strong teaching ability, excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team.
Salary will be according to qualifications and experience, as determined by the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of Â鶹´«Ã½ and the Â鶹´«Ã½ Faculty Association.
