RESEARCH ASSISTANT

Start date: June 1st, 2022
End date: September 30th, 2022
Location: 鶹ý
Remuneration: $18.00 per hour including benefits and vacation pay
Workload: 45 to 50 hours total (estimated)

Description
We are looking for an upper-level (3rd year or higher) undergraduate student to assist with the development and launch of a project website and social media strategy for a new SSHRC funded project titled “Staying motivated: A life course analysis of the career paths of Canadian public servants”. The project website will serve to publicize project goals, progress, interim and final results, and in addition will have non-public elements allowing for interactive discussions of the project between the researchers and research participants. The website must function in tandem with a social media strategy

Responsibilities
The Research Assistant (RA) is expected to familiarize themselves with the study protocol prior to starting the position. The RA will work as a part of a research team. As a part of the position, the RA will have the following responsibilities:

  • Discuss the goals of the project website with the research team.
  • Propose initial project website ideas for discussion with the research team.
  • Refine 2 or 3 selected website ideas for further discussion with the team.
  • Finalize the project website and prepare a detailed set of instructions as appropriate for ongoing maintenance and servicing of the website.


Qualifications
The ideal candidate must be enrolled in their third or higher year of an undergraduate degree at 鶹ý (or another University in Halifax) and have completed a sufficient number of computer science or information related courses. The candidate must have a strong academic background (as evidenced by grades in course work) and demonstrated ability to develop websites. The candidate must be fluent in the English language and have editing capabilities. Experience with the development of research related websites would be an asset. Experience working with academic research teams would be an asset. Knowledge of the French language would be an asset.

RESEARCH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ASSISTANT

Workload: Estimated 12 hours per week on average

Description
We are looking for a graduate student in the field of information management to assist with improvements to the Research Information System (RIS) for the Faculty of Management. The two main elements of the RIS are: (i) how we obtain and track data related to our Faculty’s research outputs, including publications, presentations, and funding; and (ii) how we present the data to the world, for example via reports, stories, announcements, dashboards or other.

Responsibilities
The Research Information Management Assistant (RIMA) will work as a part of a team on the assessment of the existing RIS, identification of opportunities for improvement, and th e development of an ungraded RIS. The RIMA will:

  • schedule bi-weekly meetings with the team and consult as needed with individual team members and other members of the Faculty;
  • prepare draft documents, including the descriptions of the target audiences and goals for the RIS, and guidance for the ongoing use of the RIS;
  • prepare proposals for upgrades in the RIS;
  • assist with the technical development of new elements of the RIS


Qualifications
The ideal candidate must be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program related to information management (for example Master of Information, Master of Information Management, Master of Digital Innovation) at 鶹ý. The RIMA must have demonstrated skills in the use and mining of bibliometric databases (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar), basic analytics, and data visualization. Familiarity with a variety of relevant software and programming languages (e.g. Gephi, VOSviewer, R, Python, Excel) will be an asset. Experience working in an academic research setting will be an asset.
