DEMONSTRATOR/MARKER POSTING BIOL/MARI 4880: Communicating science for societal impact Winter 2022/23

POSITION: Demonstrator/Marker*
One position available– PAY RATE: $16.61 per hour, 37 hours) *type of position and number of hours are subject to budgetary approval.

COURSE SCHEDULE: Lectures/Tutorials W 11:35am-2:25pm
COURSE INFORMATION: This class is aimed at students interested in conceptualizing and communicating scientific content in a way that amplifies its relevance to society. We learn about communication tools and venues to reach the media, decision makers, regulators, and the public. Real-life media projects deepen learning and help put theory into practise. This class is taught in an integrated lecture/tutorial format and relies heavily on in-class discussion and exercises.
ROLE OF DEMONSTRATOR/MARKER: As a DM for this course, you will have the opportunity to develop your teaching skills through direct student interactions and giving detailed formative and summative feedback on assignments. There are 6 written assignments, and no exams. Your marking duties will require you to appropriately use rubrics to assign students grades. Looking for an exceptionally motivated DM who is interested in working to engage and support a diverse group of undergraduates in finding their voices as science communicators.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Critical grading of assignments requires thorough writing and language skills. Previous teaching or education experience in non-scientific venues is an asset. Graduate students and past students of BIOL4880 or similar courses are especially encouraged to apply.
