WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor (Dr. Tatiana Rossolimo) with the summer class Biology 3328.03, Medical Entomology, which is taught from May 15 – 30, 2023. Duties include: Demonstrating and helping students in the lab; answering questions and offering feedback; marking exercises, lab exams, and collections; organizing equipment and supplies; demonstrating on the field trips; and preparation for the field trips.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: BSc in Biology (completed or near-completion), experience in lab work in entomology, experience identification of arthropods, especially insects; minimum A grade in Medical Entomology class. Previous experience teaching entomology labs and/or field trips will be considered an asset. Candidates must provide up to date (within last 3 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification or be willing to complete a certification course before the position begins.

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Summer SEASIDE program, Biology Department

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor (Andrea Gigeroff) with the summer class BIOL 3639 Herpetology, taught May 15 – 30, 2023. The demonstrator will be responsible for supervising and ensuring the safety of students during day trips and one overnight field trip (May 19-21); assisting students with assignments; marking. Demonstrator will help the instructor prepare a meal plan in consultation with the class, and obtain food and supplies prior to the trip. Also will be required to drive students to field station and for daily field work in SUVs or 7-passenger vehicles.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Driver’s license valid in NS, extensive driving experience and excellent driving record. Standard First Aid and CPR certification within last 3 years. Good physical condition (considerable hiking and moderate physical labour are required). Familiarity with Nova Scotian herpetofauna an asset (previous student in the course, and/or previous demonstrator in the course). Experience leading groups in the field; and previous experience at the Harrison Lewis Centre also an asset.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor (Dr. Peter Bush) with the laboratory portion of the summer class BIOL/ ENVS/ GEOG/ MARI 3633.03, Intro to Spatial Information and GIS in Ecology, taught June 1 – 16, 2023. The 60‐hour position will help students develop GIS skills in the lab.
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Previous GIS course experience; evidence of well‐developed GIS skills, previous GIS teaching/TA experience an asset.

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: June 6 – 12, 2023
WORK ASSIGNMENT: Assist the instructor (Dr. Peter Bush) with the field portion of the summer class BIOL/ ENVS/ GEOG/ MARI 3633.03, Intro to Spatial Information and GIS in Ecology, taught June 1 – 16, 2023. The 60‐hour positions will accompany the class on a 5‐day field trip; prepare a meal plan in consultation with the class, and obtain food and supplies prior to the trip; drive students to field station and for daily field work in 7‐passenger vans; accompany student teams in the field; assist with data collection; attend to student safety; help students in ecological aspects of field project (e.g., identifying species, sampling design, data collection); coordinate meal preparation and cleaning at the field station; and clean and return supplies after the field trip.
REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of the marine and/or terrestrial ecology of NS. Driver’s license valid in NS, extensive driving experience and excellent driving record. Standard First Aid and CPR certification within last 3 years. Good physical condition (considerable hiking and moderate physical labour are required). Priority will be given to candidates with one or more of the following: knowledge of GIS, specifically ArcPro; GPS and compass navigational skills; experience with field sampling in terrestrial and/or marine environments; research experience in marine biology; ability to identify plants, lichens, birds, marine invertebrates, and/or algae; experience leading groups in the field; and previous experience at the Harrison Lewis Centre
