Francoise Baylis, a bioethicist who gave the address during Monday鈥檚 ceremony, said in an interview she鈥檚 concerned by Trump鈥檚 actions and the recent emergence of opposition from several MPs to a parliamentary motion condemning Islamophobia and racism.

鈥淚鈥檓 very mindful of the broader political and social context we鈥檙e in now,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 want to follow our prime minister in terms of 鈥� we鈥檙e going to be positive, we鈥檙e going to be open, we鈥檙e going to be welcoming and we鈥檙e going to give out a very clear message that if you want strength you get it through diversity.鈥�

鈥淭hese ceremonies are a reminder to Canadians of what we have.鈥�
