Study Permit


A Study Permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows international students to study in Canada for a limited period of time. The Study Permit is linked to the institution () where the learning takes place. Ìý

If your period of study at Â鶹´«Ã½ is longer than six months, youÌýmust have a Study Permit. If you plan to study in Canada for less than 6 months, you can do so without a study permit, but you may need a or an to enter Canada. If you plan to extend your studies beyond 6 months, you will need to apply for a study permit.

Provincial Attestation Letter

As of 2024, some categories of international students now require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) as part of their study permit application. A PAL is an official document, issued by the province or territory where the (e.g. Â鶹´«Ã½) is located, that confirms you are eligible to apply for a study permit. PALs are issued after an international student has been formally offered admission to a Designated Learning Institution. Â鶹´«Ã½ will advise you on the PAL process, including whether you require a PAL, after your application to Â鶹´«Ã½ has been received. A Study Permit may also include provisions that allow international students to work on/off-campus when enrolled in full-time studies (see Working in Canada).

Applying for a Study Permit

Most international students who are applying for a Study Permit for the first time will apply from outside Canada. They receive their study permit when they arrive in Canada at their first port of entry (e.g. airport, land border).
