Tractor Safety Course instructor

Extended Learning is seeking casual instructors to teach the Nova Scotia Tractor Safety course.

The Nova Scotia Tractor Safety course is a two-day course designed to increase awareness and test the competency of 14–16-year-old tractor operators, who have a valid Class 8 driver's license, about the safe operation and use of farm tractors and implements on Nova Scotia public roads.

The course is held at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Agricultural Campus in Truro, NS and uses tractors and implements from the campus farm.

Requirements:
• 5-7 years’ experience operating farm tractors and attached implements
• Demonstrated knowledge of highway regulations as they relate to farm tractors
• Experience teaching a small group applied skills in a safe and professional manner

Roles and responsibilities
• Deliver lessons and practical training activities in the classroom and outdoors using provided course materials and equipment
• Conduct formative and summative assessments (all assessments are provided)
• Provide reports and gather learner feedback (evaluation forms are provided)
• Work within an agreed-upon schedule
• Ensure that training is delivered in a safe manner and environment, and using prescribed curriculum
• Be accountable for personal tasks and responsibilities as assigned
• Provide recommendations on training facilities and resources
• Ensure the best interests of learners, Extended Learning, and the faculty are met

Instructors will be compensated for their time.

Âé¶¹´«Ã½ the course: Safe operation of a tractor and farm machinery is important on all farms and operations. The Tractor Safety training course is designed to increase awareness and test the competency of tractor operators with regard to the safe operation and use of farm tractors and implements.

The following people can take this course:
• 14 to 16-year-olds with a valid Nova Scotia Class 8 driver's license who want to be able to haul equipment on Nova Scotia roads
• Those with a valid class 5 driver's license who want to increase their tractor safety knowledge and skills

This course is not intended to teach tractor driving. Participants must provide proof of having a minimum of 10 hours of supervised tractor driving experience before taking the course. Participants with a valid Nova Scotia Class 8 driver’s license who successfully complete the course with a minimum of 70% on the written and driven evaluations, will receive a wallet card that enables them to operate a tractor with an attached implement on Nova Scotia roads. Please note that the wallet card is valid for a farm tractor and trailer if the combined weight is 14,000 kg or less.

The course typically takes place once per year (June) on a Friday and Saturday and may also be offered on demand. Extended Learning programs are delivered on a cost recovery model. Without adequate external funding, or course enrollments, programs are cancelled. Instructors in EL programs are not compensated for cancelled programming
