HIFF 2013: The Nine Muses

(2011). John Akomfrah鈥檚 film is a wide-ranging, all encompassing song cycle about the history and identity, myth and memory. Inspired by Homer鈥檚 epic poem, The Odyssey, The Nine muses is a highly stylized retelling of mass migration from Africa and the Caribbean to Britain after the Second World War. Mixing fascinating historical archive footage of Black British communities during the fifties and sixties with stunning imagery of snow-covered Alaskan vistas, The Nine Muses is a remarkable meditation on chance, fate and redemption. 聽

HIFF 2012: The Forgotten Space

(2010) is an essayistic documentary that follows container cargo aboard ships, barges, trains and trucks, listening to workers, engineers, planners, politicians, and stories of those marginalized by the global transport system. Based on Sekula鈥檚 essay 鈥淔ish Story,鈥 The Forgotten Space seeks to understand and visualize the contemporary maritime economy in relation to the symbolic legacy of the sea itself.
