Undergraduate Degree Options


Major in History (B.A. level)

BA with Major in History (120 credit hour)

The 120 credit hour Major requires more advanced training in History than does the three-year degree. Besides the general degree requirements for all BA degrees, students majoring in History are required to take:  

  • One course from each of the 4 Groups (A,B,C,D)
  • HIST 2700.03, Introduction to Historical Methods.  [New - only applies to students who begin from Sept. 2022 forward].    
  • At least 36, but not more than 54, History credit hours above the 1000-level.
  • At least 18 of these History credit hours must be 3000- or 4000-level classes.
  • After the first 30 credit hours, students must take six credit hours in each of two subjects other than history.
  • Within the last 90 credit hours, students must take at least six credit hours in each of two subjects other than History. 
  • At least one 4000-level seminar in History (3 credit hours).

BA with Double Major including History (120 credit hour)

Besides the general requirements for all BA programs, students must meet the faculty degree requirements for the BA with Double Major, which include:

  • One course from each of the 4 Groups (A,B,C,D)
  • HIST 2700.03, Introduction to Historical Methods. [New - only applies to students who begin from Sept. 2022 forward].
  • A total of 60 to 84 credit hours in the two Major subjects above the 1000-level, with no more than 48, nor fewer than 30, in either subject.
  • Students must complete at least 18 credit hours above the 2000-level in each Major subject.
  • After the first 30 credit hours, students must take six credit hours in a single subject other than History and the other Double Major subject.
  • Within the last 30 credit hours, students must complete six credit hours in a single subject other than the two Major subjects.
  • If History is the primary subject of the Double Major (i.e., more credits in History than in the other subject of the Double Major), students must take at least one 4000-level seminar (three credit hours).


Honours in History (B.A. level)

BA with Honours in History (120 credit hour)

This degree is intended for students who plan to proceed to graduate work and for others who wish to enjoy the experience of an intensive research project, the Honours Essay. Students must complete the requirements for the BA with a Major in History (see above) and fulfil the following additional requirements:

  • Applicants normally should have achieved an existing Grade Point Average of at least 3.3 in History courses taken above the 1000-level to be considered for admission to the Honours Program.
  • Honours students must take at least 54, but not more than 66, credit hours in History beyond the 1000-level.
  • A grade of B- or better is required on 54 History credit hours.
  • Honours students must take HIST 4981/4982, the Honours Essay, and HIST 4971/4972, the Honours Seminar. In addition, at least 12 credit hours must be 3000- or 4000-level classes; of these, at least three credit hours must be at the 4000-level.
  • A grade of B- or better is required on the Honours Essay.

Note: [PDF-57 KB] in History are not considered by the department until the winter term of the student's third year. Please inquire at the department for the relevant deadline. Any questions about the program can be directed to our Undergraduate and Honours Coordinator.

BA with Combined Honours including History (120 credit hour)

Besides the general requirements for all BA programs (see above), students must meet the faculty degree requirements for Combined Honours (120 credit hour).

  • Students must take 66-84 credit hours in the two Honours subjects beyond the 1000-level, with no more than 48, nor fewer than 30, credit hours in either of them. 
  • Students must complete 18 credit hours at the 3000/4000-level in both Honours subjects.
  • Within the last 90 credit hours, students must take at least six credit hours in a single subject other than the two Honours subjects. 
  • Students will do the Honours Essay (or equivalent) in one of the Honours subjects. If you choose History as your primary subject (i.e., you take more classes in History than in your other Combined Honours subject), you will write an Honours Essay (HIST 4981/4982) and take the Honours seminar (HIST 4971/4972). A grade of B- or better is required in at least 24 History credit hours.


Minors in the History Department (B.A. level)

BA with Concentration/Minor in History (90 credit hour)

This three-year program is a general liberal arts degree with a concentration (i.e., a Minor) in History. It permits a wide range of choice in the selection of classes. Besides the general degree requirements for all BA degrees, students are required to take:

  • At least 18, and not more than 27, credit hours in History above the 1000-level.
  • At least 12 of these credit hours must be 3000- or 4000-level classes.
  • After the first five credits, students must take six credit hours in each of two subjects other than history.
