Program Overview:
The Trent-in-Bolivia program (TiB) is a collaborative initiative between Trent University's International Development Studies department and Languages & Linguistics program. This semester-long study abroad experience in Sucre, Bolivia, in partnership with Universidad San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (USFX), offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their Spanish language skills while delving into critical issues such as resource extraction, Indigenous movements, gender equality, and rights. The program takes place at the second oldest university in the Americas in a city known for its vibrant culture, rich history, stunning colonial architecture, and warm hospitality. Before applying, it is advisable to consult with your academic advisors in the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department as well as the International Development Studies (IDS) or other departments regarding course equivalences at Â鶹´«Ã½ and to obtain a Letter of Permission. Students must have completed a basic level of Spanish (SPAN1021.03 and SPAN 1022.03, SPAN 1035 or equivalent) with at least a B average.Ìý

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý1. IDST 3860Y: Bolivian Seminar - A module-based course covering topics such as ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýIndigenous social movements, Andean Indigenous jurisdiction, feminist struggles, ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýgender-based violence, and a case study on mining in the Potosà region.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý2. IDST 3840H: Field Course in Community Development - This course combines ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýtheoretical, methodological, and practical reflections on development studies with ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýhands-on community development experience. It involves a placement with an ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýorganization or community addressing social and economic issues.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý3. SPAN 2500Y: Intermediate Spanish - An intensive course in oral and written ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýSpanish, with a focus on conversational skills relevant to the Bolivian context.Ìý
ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýThe Spanish and Latin American Department of Â鶹´«Ã½ will grant the equivalence ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Ìýof 6 credits of Intermediate Spanish. Equivalences include Span 2021 and Span 2022,Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Span 2035, or a combination of Span 2021 and 2005 or 2022 and 2005.
Upon return, students are encouraged to continue their studies in Spanish and pursue a Minor.
