Sonja R. Weil Memorial Bursary

Purpose:

To provide one or more annual bursaries to a MSW student(s) in the School of Social Work.

Conditions:

Earnings from the fund will be used to support one or more annual bursaries for students enrolled in the MSW program of the School of Social Work. The bursary will be known as the Sonja R. Weil Memorial Bursary. The earnings available for spending on an annual basis will be determined by the Endowment Management Policy as approved by the Board of Governors of the University. The recipient(s) will have demonstrated financial need and satisfactory academic standing. First priority will be given to students enrolled in the Master of Social Work program. In determining the recipient(s) the committee shall give preference to students who, in addition to meeting the criteria above have demonstrated an interest in those areas which reflect most closely the work of Sonja Weil in child and family therapy.

Background:

Sonja Weil was born in Saskatchewan in 1943 and moved to Halifax at the age of seven. She attended schools in Halifax and graduated from Â鶹´«Ã½ with a Bachelor of Arts in 1964. She earned a degree in Social Work from Simmonds College in Boston, Massachusetts in 1966. She was an award winning psychiatric social worker, a published author, a psychotherapist and a faculty member of the Chicago Institute of Psychoanalysis. At the time of her death she was in private practice as a psychiatric social worker in Hyde Park, Illinois.
