WORK ASSIGNMENT: Several TA positions are available (depending on enrolment) to assist the instructor with the summer class ENVS 2000.03, Environmental Science Urban Field School, in the field and classroom. Duties will include assisting in preparation of class materials and exercises, obtaining, and preparing field gear and supplies, assisting in teaching duties in the field, providing logistical support for trips, and assisting with marking of exercises. This second-year, Environmental Science class will provide students with hands-on experience in the subject of field methodology across the interdisciplinary field of Environmental Science. The class will be held from May 19 to May 30, 2025, Mondays to Fridays, and TAs must be available for the full day during the course. The TAs will also be needed to assist the instructor with preparatory work during the week of May 12th, 2025
REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: Research, teaching, or relevant class work experience in an aspect of Environmental Science. Schedule must be free every day except weekends (must have no other commitments) from May 19 to 30. Experience with field work, GIS, and/or statistics is an asset (but not required).

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Teaching Assistant (TA) will be responsible for assisting the primary instructor, overseeing the computer lab sessions, marking assignments and helping to ensure timeliness and consistency of grade submissions. The position requires availability during lab sessions May 05- 15, Monday – Friday from 1:30-4:30. The candidate will report directly to the instructor.
REQUIREMENTS: The Teaching Assistant must be a senior undergraduate or graduate student at Â鶹´«Ã½ with GIS experience (familiarity with R coding an asset). The ability to communicate and manage time effectively, lead tutorials, mark assignments in a timely manner, and provide constructive feedback to students are key assets for these positions.

Teaching Assistant: ENVS 2500, Field Methods in Environmental Science (Spring 2025)

Position: Teaching Assistants for ENVS 2500: Field Methods in Environmental Science Summer Term 2025. ENVS 2500 is an intensive field course scheduled at 9:00-17:00 from May 5 – 15, 2025. The course is a combination of field and lab instruction with field trips on campus and around Halifax.
Rate of Pay: According to the CUPE Collective Agreement
The course content includes the following topics:
1) wildlife sampling such as visual and auditory identification of eastern Canadian avian, amphibian, and reptile species
2) soil sampling and composition analysis with a potential for water sampling
3) urban trees, tree diseases, and invasive pests and plants
TA responsibilities:
Managing student groups during field trips
Providing on site instruction and guidance
Marking assignments, tests, and quizzes
Responding to student queries
TAs will also meet with the course instructor as needed to prepare for course activities. The position requires availability during scheduled field/lab sessions and may include before hours set-up and after-hours clean-up.
Requirements: The Teaching Assistant must be a senior undergraduate or graduate student at Â鶹´«Ã½. The following skills are required for the position: 1) effective communication; 2) ability to lead and engage students in field settings; and 3) assessment grading including provision of constructive feedback. Although not required, experience with one or more of the three course topics listed above is a definite asset.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant will be responsible for assisting the primary instructor for ENVS / ERTH / GEOG 3500 "Geographic Information Science and Spatial Data" with delivering the lab component of the class. Responsibilities include providing monitoring two in-person lab sessions per week; monitoring and responding to discussion board questions related to structured workshops and lab projects; minor editing of workshop instructions; grading small value assignments; and providing occasional one on one assistance through screen sharing applications. The Marker/Demonstrator will be responsible for assisting the primary instructor with grading lecture-based assignments and large-value lab projects and tests / exams. The TA and M/D report directly to the instructor.
REQUIREMENTS: The Teaching Assistants and Marker/Demonstrator must be senior undergraduate or graduate students at Â鶹´«Ã½, with strong command of Geographic Information Systems software (primarily ESRI ArcGIS Proâ„¢). The ability to communicate effectively, to lead and engage ERTH 3500 students and provide constructive feedback are required skills for this position.
