A New Medical Sciences Cohorts Initiative
Inclusive Pathways to Medical Professions (IPMP)
Overview
Working with the communities most underrepresented in our region, the new Inclusive Pathways to Medical Professions (IPMP) cohort initiative aims to attract and support Indigenous students from the Maritimes and African Nova Scotian students in the Medical Sciences BSc program using a cohort approach. We welcomed our first IPMP cohort students in Fall 2022.
Currently, we are accepting 12 Indigenous and 12 African Nova Scotian students to the IPMP cohorts each academic year (in addition to our current enrolment). Each cohort has a wrap-around support framework that is overseen by Cohort Advisors, who themselves are representative of our target communities.
This program achieves the following:
(i) Increases the representation of Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students in the Medical Sciences BSc program
(ii) Â Increases the representation of Indigenous and African Nova Scotian students in downstream programs including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy etc.
(iii)Â Strengthens ties with the Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities
