Abstract:

Polar dense waters fill the deepest parts of the ocean basins and drive the thermohaline circulation. They are primarily formed in the ice-free ocean surface as a result of increased heat loss and brine rejection during sea ice formation. While sinking to the ocean´s interior, those waters can carry large amounts of dissolved inorganic carbon to depth, a process known as solubility pump and one of the major sinks in the global carbon cycle. On polar shelves, wind stress from land keeps large areas ice-free, intensifying dense water formation. A co-location with increased biological carbon (C) fixation, as observed for certain polar shelf regions, could, next to dissolved inorganic carbon, also cause an injection of particulate organic carbon into the deep basins, but investigations on this mechanism were missing so far.

Here I present recent results on this dense water injection pump in Arctic and Antarctic waters. I show the discovery and quantification of a deep plume of particulate material in the Arctic Nansen and Amundsen Basin, representing a long-range transport of shelf-based particles over thousands of kilometers. Moreover, by combining field, satellite and numerical model data, I identify the Antarctic southern Weddell Sea shelf as another hotspot of the dense water injection pump and establish a detailed net C budget for this area.
