Suzanne Lynn Johnson, is the Manager of International Projects and Lindsay Miles-Pickup is a Project Officer at the Faculty of Agriculture. On Friday, September 25, Suzanne and Lindsay will be giving a pop-up lecture that challenges your perceptions of the traditional farm. Learn how our ever expanding global society, innovation and technology are impacting international development in agriculture and the way we learn.

Five things you didn't know about the Faculty of Agriculture

The Faculty of Agriculture is the 12th Faculty of the 麻豆传媒 family. On May 20th, 2011, the Province of Nova Scotia and 麻豆传媒 launched a process to merge Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) with 麻豆传媒. The Faculty, located on the Agricultural Campus in Truro (Bible Hill), is an idyllic place to live, work, play and learn.

Here are some other things you might not know about the Faculty of Agriculture:

We (also) have our own postage stamp.
Faculty of Agriculture students and alumni refer to themselves as 鈥淎ggies鈥�
Our varsity roster boasts a Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Woodsmen team
Our first tractor was donated by Henry Ford himself
Our grads wear the Faculty of Agriculture Barley ring

鈥淭he person that I am now and the person that I was when I started here are two totally different people. I鈥檝e found confidence I didn鈥檛 realize I had. When I started, I didn鈥檛 know where I was going. I know where I鈥檓 going now. I don鈥檛 know where I鈥檒l end up, but I know that I鈥檓 on the right road.鈥�

Stephanie Hall - Graduate Student, Aquaculture

鈥淚 came here in 1983 for five years. I鈥檝e never left. Some people work for 30 years and get one year鈥檚 experience 30 times. I can say that I have 30 years of experience. I enjoy what I鈥檓 doing here. The great thing about being here is that you keep on learning.鈥�

"I was proud to be a part of creating the Faculty of Agriculture Rock Garden which a lot of people never thought would happen. It was just a dream and now we have one of the foremost garden features in Atlantic Canada. It鈥檚 a great feeling of accomplishment!"

鈥淏eing a university professor is a great gig. Honestly, there鈥檚 so much you can do. You have a responsibility to work within your field more or less, but that said, you can follow your interests. It鈥檚 wonderful.鈥�

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think our campus has changed much. Well, not how people feel about us anyway. I think that鈥檚 what everyone was worried about when we merged with Dal. That the community of our campus would change. I feel that everybody still acts the same even though we鈥檙e not the same, administration wise. It鈥檚 a like a family. I feel like more positive things have changed. We鈥檝e seen some growth and investment into some infrastructure and some program changes. Change is not always a bad thing.鈥�

鈥淢ost of our children here are affiliated with Dal in some way. A lot of their parents are employees or students at Dal and then we have some kids from the community as well. We鈥檝e had students here at the daycare who have actually started here, gone through the system and are now students at Dal. It makes you pretty proud to see that.鈥�

Judi Warwick - Childcare Worker

鈥淥ne of my proudest moments was receiving my barley ring. I come to work every day and love what I do. We really try to take it to the next level here. We want students to feel at home, because this is their home away from home, so we really try to offer the experience along with their meal. So receiving an honorary barley ring and getting that recognition from the entire campus community was a really proud and heartwarming moment.鈥�

Julie Gillis - Food Service Director

鈥淭here鈥檚 always something new to do here. Stuff that you鈥檇 never really think about. For a few years I was flying a remote-control helicopter for one project that we were working on doing mapping and aerial photography. Who would have thought? You never know when you come in in the morning what new projects are in store.鈥�

Chris Nelson - Senior Instructor, Engineering

"I am the oldest girl in the Ruminant Animal Centre born March 10th 2003. I have four daughters, seven granddaughters and seven great granddaughters. My proudest moment at Dal was when I was 12 years old and delivered a happy and healthy set of twins. I have produced 100,000 L of milk and counting!"

"I started here 18 years ago as a cleaner and now I am general foreperson of the maintenance crew. I love that I can be doing anything on any given day. It鈥檚 always different. I learn something new every day."

"I wasn鈥檛 very sure if I liked agriculture at first but when I started to go to class, each class and each professor became part of a mini puzzle. When I graduated in May, the puzzle was finally complete and I understood exactly what agriculture was. I want to take my knowledge and experience in agriculture and contribute to the industry; to help people to grow food better and to live better."
