Project background

The Qanittaq Clean Arctic Shipping Initiative () is a partnership between academic and Inuit organizations to address and respond to concerns about the growth in Arctic shipping and related environmental impacts on Northern communities. The Marine & Environmental Law Institute (MELAW), Schulich School of Law, at Â鶹´«Ã½ is a key partner in the Qanittaq Initiative, led by Memorial University and the Inuit Circumpolar Council (Canada). Researchers at MELAW and the Department of Industrial Engineering (Faculty of Engineering), will focus on multidisciplinary issues of shipping, ocean, maritime and environmental law, and Indigenous and Aboriginal law in the Arctic context.

Impact assessment has become a major decision support tool guided by international and national rules, standards, and processes. To date, shipping per se has not usually been subject to impact assessment processes except when part of a major project, such as port and mining development. The aim of this project is to explore how impact assessment processes, such as environmental impact assessment, strategic environmental assessment, human rights impact assessment, and Indigenous-led impact assessment, could be applied to polar shipping in the designation of low impact shipping corridors, when considering cumulative impacts including climate change, as well as impacts on human rights and especially Indigenous rights, and as guided by the SDGs.

Terms of reference for LLM

Term: 1 year [September 1, 2024 – August 31, 2025]

Role and tasks in the project: to complete an LLM thesis designed to clarify existing law in relation to a specific to-be-determined aspect of the impact assessment project; participation in Qanittaq-related project activities is expected.

Qualifications: JD, with optional specialization in marine, environmental or Indigenous law

Remuneration: $35,000 scholarship
